Costing

Being realistic, funding a PhD is expensive, an overseas Arts, Humanities, Social Science student can expect to pay on average £10,000, Science or Engineering up to £14,000 a year in fees alone. Universities will also charge a premium rate depending on their results in Research Assessment Exercise in 2008 www.rae.ac.uk.

In addition to fees you will need to allow for your living expenses.  The UK Border Agency quotes a student needing around £800 a month for living within London and £600 a month outside central London.

Even if you are fortunate enough to be able to fund yourself through your studies, you will still need to present your application in the best possible light to obtain an offer from one of the top UK research institutions.
